tweaks
Notice: You should have some knowledge about windows registry editing and also its highly recommended to make a backup and create a system restore point. to run system registry editor type regedt32 in your run box.
I don't have any responsibility about any damages that happen to your PC cause of using these tweaks So try them in your risk.
1- To adding a messege to to start up :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\microsoft\windows NT\currentversion\Winlogon add messege to the start up
2- To enbale or disable balloon tips :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\advanced Create dword value and rename it to EnableBalloonTIps and set it to 0x00000000.
3- To change the size of images and videos thumbnails:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\explorer Add a new DWORD value Rename it to ThumbnailSize and give it a hexidecimal value that is between 32 and 256
(also if you wanna apply that to only crurent user use HKEY_CURRENT_USER instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE )
4- To disable your cd rom autorun :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom\AutoRun 0 for disable and 1 for enable
5- To changing the time of unread messseges number appear under your acount name :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\MessageExpiryDays
and change its value to the number of days you prefer.
6- To making start up and shutdown status verbose or not :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\ploicies\system add a new dword value and rename it to Verbose status and change its value to 0 for disable and 1 for enbale
7- To disable the seach assistant :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\CabinetState
Then add a new string called usesearchAsst and set the data value to No
8- To remove annoying low disk space baloon :
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\ then add a new dword value and rename it to NoLowDiskSpaceChecks and set the data vlaue to 1 to turn it off.
9- To make the original administrator visible:
Go to HKEY_ LOCAL_ MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ WindowsNT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon\ SpecialAccounts\ UserList and add DWORD Value with a name of Administrator and a value of 1.
10- To speed the time to end the servies (thats help to speed shutdown time)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control
Click on control folder in the right window you will see the following key
"WaitToKillServiceTimeOut" Double click that key and set it to a value lower than 20000
(Value like 100 will be great)
11- Prefetch is a new feature in windows xp and its keep trakcing programs to make it start faster so here it is how you can disable it and also how to make it doin better prefetch
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters
Change the value of the EnablePrefetcher to 0 to disable also you can set it to 5 to make it workin better anway give both of them a try and then deside
12- Here it is the latest and the most (in my opinion) important tweak if you by wrong used a serial number the microsoft decided its an illegal serial number and you need to change it to be able to install windows XP service pack 1 and get updates from windows update site
First go to
HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current
Version\WPAEvents,
on the right double click on
"oobetimer"
and change at least one digit of this
value to deactivate windows.
now restart (and if you got any
problems you can hit F8 and choose last known good configuration) and type this
line in your RUN box:
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a
13- if you are on a network, windows XP scans all connected machines for scheduled tasks, slowing down your networking speeds, stop it by deleting the D6277990-4c6a-11cf-8d87-00aa0060f5bf value from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsfot\windows\currentversion\explorer\remotecomputer\namespace\key in the registry and web pages will load more quickly.
14- you can prioritise programs or services fro processor time under system properties, advanced, performance, settings, advanced, processor scheduling. But if you edit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\prioritycontrol\win32priorityseperation in the registry, you can fine tune this further. Try the maximum value of 28 (decimal) or experiment.
15- If windows XP takes long time to shut down programs that have crashed while it checks them, you can shorten the delay from the default 5 seconds by changing the registry value hungapptimeout value )in milliseconds) in the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\control Panel\desktop.
16- By default windows XP gives programs 20 seconds to clean up after themselves when you shut down, you can shorten that time by changing the waittokillapptimeout value (in milliseconds) in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\control Panel\ desktop.
17- Windows XP also waits for 20 seconds for each service to finish, so if your system takes a long time to shut down, try changing waittokillservicetimeout in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control .
18- Get windows XP to automatically shut down applications when you shut windows down, change the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\control panel\desktop\autoendtasks key to 1.
19- By default windows XP doesnt support ultra DMA 66, if your hard drive and controller use this mode, get faster data transfers by adding the DWORD value enableUDMA66 (with a value of 1) under the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\class\4d36e96a-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318\0000
20- Here it is another sweet one ;) unload dlls, windows XP keeps DLL files in memory after applications have finished using them, in case theyre needed again. That can use lots of memory, try turning the cache off in the registry by changing the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\alwaysunloadDLL
